South River Vineyard Expands
January 22nd, 2007
The tasting room at South River Vineyards may come as a surprise to you. Visitors are invited to enter a more than 100-year old church to enjoy the estate-bottled wines. Its spire points majestically into the summer blue skies and makes it easy to find this Grand River Valley winery.
rnrnLike more than one-half of Ohio's current wineries, the South River Vineyard opened within the past five years. Gene and Heather Sigel set out with a plan that included expanding the vineyards and establishing their wines as high quality. For them this meant starting in the vineyards to grow the very best grapes possible. Despite a few setbacks, including a visit from Hurricane Katrina's remnants, South River has begun to put grapes in a newly prepared 15-acre vineyard next to their farm. With four acres of grapes such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Semillon already planted in the new vineyard, they are well on their way to more success.
rnrnAlso finished in December 2006 was a beautiful expansion of the existing church. A brick porch was added to the back of the building giving visitors a spectacular view of the vineyards while they enjoy the Sigel's wines. The historically based brick structure melds with the historic white clapboard church to welcome visitors and wedding to this unique spot.rn
rnSouth River Vineyard is an exceptional illustration of what Ohio's newest wineries are doing. Quality is the key in wines and in customer service and response. The official celebration won't be until later in the spring of 2007 but check their website for winter hours, if you want to get a head start.rn
