Spagio Highlights Ohio's Wines, Cheeses in Tasting Series
September 3rd, 2008
When most Westerners think of great wine-producing regions, images of sprawling vineyards in the French countryside or the rolling green hills of northern California often come to mind.rnrnWhen it comes to cheese, Wisconsin or Switzerland might be th eir first thought.rnrnSpagio Cellars in Grandview Heights, owned by chef Hubert Seifert, is inviting wine and cheese lovers to a tasting that might challenge preconceptions about where the "good stuff" comes from.rnrnOn Thursday, Sept. 4, Spagio Cellars, 1291 Grandview Ave., will host a wine- and cheese-tasting event featuring selections of both made in Ohio. The wine for the evening will be cool-weather varietals from Debonne Winery in Grand River. The selection will include white wines in a Pinot Grigio and a Riesling and reds in a Cabernet Franc and a Chambourcin. The cheese for the evening will be a variety of six old-world Swiss cheeses from Steiner Cheese in Baltic.rnrnSpagio Cellars Manager Frank Slezak said the cheeses will be used in a variety of different dishes and paired with the wines for the tasting. The cheeses also will be available on tasting boards or to take home, Slezak said. "It's just promoting local agriculture and a strong relationship with local foods," he said.rnrnSpagio will host another tasting Oct. 2 featuring Heini's Cheese of Millersburg, and Spagio currently is finalizing the wine producer, Slezak said.rnrnA Nov. 6 tasting will feature a Swiss and Marble cheese selection from Pearl Valley Cheese and wine from Kinkead Ridge Vineyard and Winery in Ripley.rnrnAll three cheese producers are part of the Ohio Proud program. Ohio Proud is an Ohio Department of Agriculture program that ensures the products are at least 50 percent grown, raised or processed in Ohio.rnrn"We're very excited to showcase Ohio-produced cheeses at such a great venue," said Jenny Hubble, vice president of communications for American Dairy Association Mideast, a promotion and networking program on behalf of dairy farmers. "I think a lot of people don't realize that Ohio has such great products," said Hubble. "It's just a great opportunity to pair Ohio cheeses with Ohio wines and just to create awareness for consumers."rnrnSlezak said there are plans to host at least one more installment of the series in January. "There is a big movement that is going on" with consumers showing interest in locally produced goods, said Slezak. "It's not just what we're doing, it's what is going on in the global market place," he said.rnrnThe Sept. 4 tasting will begin at 7 p.m.; the price is $44.95, which includes tax and gratuity.rnrnFor more information visit rn http://spagio.com |
